Strategy 1: Collecting and Processing Words: Making Vocabulary Your Own (Vocabulary Four Square)

Grade: 2

LAFS.2.W.1.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinon and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.

ELD.K12.ELL.LA.1 English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Language Arts.

This activity helps students' to develop both better speaking and writing vocabularies. It supports understanding nuances as well as is continually building a repertoire of words and meanings that will help increase their oral language and stories. Often times students' struggle with vocabulary and this strategy can greatly help ELL students understand better. For this strategy students can create a chart collecting vocabulary words from their reading. The chart will consist of the defintion, a picture, and how they would use the word. Later that week the teacher would review and go over all the new vocabulary the students' have learned and recorded in their charts.

Grade: 2

ELD.K12.ELL.LA.1 English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Language Arts.

LAFS.2.W.2.5 With guidance and supprot from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing.

This strategy is to help students understand what the structure of a paragraph should be. To begin the teacher will show an example of paragraph and read one sentence at a time and take it apart. They should talk about substitution, capitals and punctuation. The students can then practice this in pairs and point out the mistakes. The class should continue to go over the mistakes of the paragraph. Activities like this help ELL students' support their understanding of both written and spoken material.

LAFS.2.RL.2.4 Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.

This structure of writing is so important to teach students'. This strategy focuses on English vocabulary and the content of the writing. Teachers should use visuals and hands-on demonstrations to show what writing should look like. The teacher should give the students time to observe the writing and see what is wrong/right about it. This strategy gives students' sentence structure to complete.
